ION Industries Introduces Matter-Compatible Smart Dimmer Powered by Nordic Semiconductor’s nRF52840 SoC

Dutch company ION Industries has launched an innovative LED dimmer that leverages Matter over Thread technology to deliver seamless smart home connectivity. This LED Matter Dimmer supports dimmable LED lighting from as low as 0.3 W to a maximum of 200 W, offering compatibility with Matter-certified smart home ecosystems like Apple Home and Amazon Alexa, as well as smartphone apps.

Advanced Matter over Thread Connectivity

The LED Matter Dimmer incorporates Nordic Semiconductor’s nRF52840 multiprotocol System-on-Chip (SoC), enabling users to control ON/OFF functionality, dimming settings, and brightness levels via Matter over Thread connectivity. Matter, developed by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA), is an open-source standard designed to promote interoperability between various smart home devices and ecosystems, simplifying operations for end users.

“The open standard of Matter ensures users can operate the LED Matter Dimmer alongside other smart devices using a single app, enhancing convenience and ease of use,” said Erik Geijtenbeek, Sales Director at ION Industries. Unique to this device is its physical push-turn button, making it the first of its kind globally to provide such functionality. The dimmer also features memory to retain the last-used brightness setting and includes a boost function to prevent overly bright lighting upon startup. Additionally, the dimmer aligns with global sustainability goals through its energy-saving capabilities.

Energy-Efficient and Remote Operability

The dimmer offers exceptional energy efficiency, capable of dimming back to just 0.3 W. Its remote-control functionality allows users to turn lights on or off via a smart home app even when they are away, ensuring energy conservation and convenience.

“The LED Matter Dimmer helps reduce energy consumption while providing users the flexibility to manage lighting remotely, making it a sustainable and user-friendly solution,” added Geijtenbeek.

Accelerated Development with nRF Connect SDK

ION Industries utilized Nordic Semiconductor’s nRF52840 SoC and the nRF Connect Software Development Kit (SDK) to streamline development. The nRF52840 SoC, alongside the nRF Connect SDK 2.0.2, has received the first-ever Thread 1.3 certification, a requirement for Matter over Thread solutions. This certification ensures reliable Bluetooth® LE commissioning and robust Thread-based data transfer.
