India’s Electronics Boom: PLI Scheme Set to Create 60 Lakh Jobs and Supercharge Manufacturing Growth

India’s electronics sector is on the brink of a transformation. With the Union Cabinet approving a new production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme worth ₹23,000 crore, the country is positioning itself to become a global hub for electronics manufacturing—and to create 60 lakh jobs in the process.

This new PLI initiative is focused on manufacturing key electronic components such as printed circuit boards (PCBs), surface-mount and non-surface-mount components, and even semiconductors—all critical to the rapidly growing IoT and smart device ecosystem.

Although the approved budget falls short of the ₹40,000 crore requested by industry players, the scope of this scheme is wide-reaching. “With this scheme, we’ll be able to support a large number of components which go into manufacturing finished goods, increasing domestic value addition,” said Ashwini Vaishnaw, Minister of IT & Electronics.

Building the Foundations for a $300 Billion Industry

India’s electronics manufacturing sector has seen 5X growth in production and 6X growth in exports over the past decade. Today, electronics rank among India’s top three exported categories. With this momentum, the government aims to scale the sector to $300 billion by 2030.

And it’s not just about reducing imports.

“We are not just looking at import substitution; we want large-scale manufacturing of these components for the entire world,” said Vaishnaw, reinforcing the government’s vision for export-led growth.

Creating Millions of Jobs in Smart, Modern Factories

Currently employing 25 lakh people, the electronics sector is poised to more than double that number. This job growth will come from modern electronics factories designed to meet the sector’s unique needs: clean, air-conditioned environments that house thousands of workers under one roof.

To support this, the government is working with state authorities and the labour ministry to revise regulatory frameworks to suit electronics manufacturing facilities.

This ambitious PLI scheme is not just a policy—it’s a green signal for investors, manufacturers, and job seekers in India’s smart electronics and IoT ecosystem. The groundwork is being laid today for a future powered by innovation, export excellence, and massive employment growth.
