5G connectivity from Verizon will be integrated into Honeywell smart meters for improved remote energy management.
The integration of 5G into Honeywell’s smart meters marks a pivotal moment in the digital transformation of utility management. By combining cellular connectivity with advanced IoT capabilities, this collaboration aims to empower both energy companies and consumers with unprecedented remote access to real-time energy data.
This evolution goes far beyond basic meter readings. The addition of 5G enables utilities to make informed decisions faster, with richer datasets available through platforms like Honeywell Forge Performance+ for Utilities. The result? Enhanced energy consumption insights, better resource allocation, and reduced strain on national power grids.
“Secure, reliable connectivity in smart meters makes it easier to monitor the usage of resources and the performance of utility equipment,” said TJ Fox, SVP of Industrial IoT and Automotive at Verizon Business. “That means we can reduce waste, unburden our grids, and take time and cost out of the utility management process.”
Why This Matters Now
As global energy demands grow and grids face mounting pressure, utilities must adopt digital-first strategies to maintain efficiency and reliability. With 5G from Verizon, smart meters can now:
- Instantly transmit data on consumption, grid load, and equipment status
- Enable predictive maintenance to reduce outages
- Deliver bottom-up forecasting for better demand planning
Honeywell’s Amol Motivala added, “By leveraging the power of AI, cloud, and 5G, we are driving the shift to autonomy for utilities and fundamentally changing the way energy distribution is managed.”
A Long-Term Investment in the Smart Grid
Verizon-connected smart meters also support remote software upgrades, extending device lifespan while minimizing the need for on-site visits. This upgradeability translates into:
- Lower maintenance costs
- Fewer service interruptions
- Improved customer experience
In addition, these smart meters will integrate with Verizon ThingSpace, a powerful IoT management platform. This allows utility providers to monitor their entire IoT device network in one unified dashboard.
According to John Marcus, Senior Principal Analyst at GlobalData, “There’s a clear trend toward using cellular-connected intelligence to monitor the grid for operational efficiency, health, resiliency, energy usage, and overall performance.”
What This Means for the Future
As electric vehicle infrastructure and distributed energy systems grow, connected intelligence via 5G is quickly becoming a necessity. This collaboration between Honeywell and Verizon represents a leap toward smarter utilities—where grids are more resilient, downtime is minimized, and customers benefit from seamless, reliable service.
The future of energy isn’t just digital—it’s smart, connected, and 5G-powered.
