In a significant move supporting India’s localization drive, Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) has partnered with Amara Raja Energy & Mobility Limited (ARE&M) to introduce domestically manufactured Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) batteries in its vehicles. Starting in late 2024, Hyundai will become the first automaker in India to use these Made-in-India AGM batteries, a milestone aligning with the Indian government’s “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiative.
A Leap Towards Localization
Hyundai’s collaboration with Amara Raja underscores the automaker’s commitment to local sourcing and manufacturing. These AGM batteries, branded under the AMARON name, have demonstrated superior performance and durability, surpassing traditional CMF batteries by 150%. Designed for Indian driving conditions, they feature a wider operational temperature range, longer lifespan, and enhanced energy efficiency.
The partnership also aligns with HMIL’s broader localization strategy. Hyundai’s manufacturing facility in Chennai collaborates with over 194 vendors, producing more than 1,238 components and trim parts. Its new plant in Talegaon, Maharashtra, is set to bolster this localization push further.
State-of-the-Art AGM Technology
The AMARON AGM batteries represent cutting-edge advancements in battery technology. Key features include:
- Rapid Charging: Supports modern Idle Stop and Go (ISG) systems for fuel efficiency.
- Prolonged Lifespan: Designed for extended durability and minimal maintenance.
- Improved Energy Efficiency: Meets the high electrical demands of modern vehicles.
- Compliance with Emission Standards: Validated to meet stringent Real Driving Emissions (RDE) norms, including India’s BS6 Phase 2 standards.
Economic and Environmental Impact
Localizing AGM battery production delivers both economic and environmental benefits. By reducing dependence on imports, HMIL supports job creation and stimulates domestic economic growth. Moreover, the environmental footprint is minimized due to decreased transportation requirements for imported batteries.
Statements from Industry Leaders
Gopalakrishnan Chathapuram Sivaramakrishnan, HMIL’s Chief Manufacturing Officer, highlighted the significance of this partnership, stating:
“Hyundai Motor India is proud to be the first auto OEM in India to introduce indigenously manufactured AGM battery technology. This collaboration with Amara Raja underscores our commitment to innovation, localization, and the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision.”
Harshavardhana Gourineni, Executive Director of ARE&M, emphasized the technological excellence of the AGM batteries, saying:
“This partnership marks a significant step in redefining future mobility. AMARON AGM batteries are designed to meet stringent emission norms while ensuring superior performance and durability.”
Paving the Way for Future Mobility
This initiative reinforces HMIL’s commitment to creating vehicles tailored for the Indian market. With domestically produced AGM batteries, Hyundai aims to deliver next-generation vehicles with enhanced range, improved performance, and lower emissions. These developments contribute to a more sustainable automotive future for India.
