The race to develop humanoid robots just got more competitive, as 1X, a robotics company backed by OpenAI, has acquired Kind Humanoid, a California-based startup. This strategic move is expected to accelerate humanoid development and bring bipedal robots closer to real-world applications.
Merging Visions for Advanced Humanoid Robotics
1X, known for its Neo Beta humanoid robot designed for home use, unveiled its prototype in August 2024. The company believes that robots should evolve alongside humans, and Kind Humanoid’s expertise perfectly aligns with this vision.
Founded by Christoph Kohstall, a former Stanford scientist and Google robotics team member, Kind Humanoid developed Mona, a bipedal humanoid designed for home and general use.
“It’s rare to find someone who is not just a powerhouse engineer but also completely aligned philosophically and strategically on how humanoids as products should take shape,” said 1X CEO Bernt Bornich.
With this acquisition, Kohstall will join 1X, reinforcing the company’s Bay Area presence and contributing to the rapid evolution of humanoid robotics.
A Future Where Humanoids Live and Learn Among Us
The two companies share a fundamental belief: humanoids must be developed in collaboration with humans to function effectively in real-world environments.
“From starting out in a small garage to now becoming part of a team that shares our belief in humanoids living and learning among us, this acquisition brings our vision closer to reality,” said Christoph Kohstall.
The Neo Beta prototype marked a significant milestone for 1X, featuring bio-inspired designs that allow it to safely interact with humans. With Kind Humanoid’s team joining forces, the vision of robots that seamlessly integrate into daily life is moving closer to reality.
What’s Next for Humanoid Robotics?
With OpenAI’s backing and an expanding talent pool, 1X is positioning itself as a leader in humanoid robotics. The acquisition of Kind Humanoid strengthens its research, design, and real-world deployment efforts, ensuring humanoid robots will soon become a common presence in homes and workplaces.
As the robotics industry continues to evolve, 1X’s vision of AI-powered humanoids coexisting with humans is becoming more tangible than ever.
