Rivian Sets Sights on Hands-Off, Eyes-Off Driving with Level 3 Autonomy

Rivian, the California-based electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, has outlined an ambitious roadmap toward autonomous driving. The company plans to introduce hands-off Level 2 automation this year and eyes-off Level 3 driving by 2026.

CEO RJ Scaringe shared Rivian’s vision in a press briefing, highlighting the significant advancements the company is making in self-driving technology. He stated,

“Imagine a world where you leave your house, get to the highway, and have all of your time back. You don’t have to look at the road or hold the wheel to confirm you’re present. The vehicle will handle everything. That’s absolutely in the roadmap.”

Understanding Rivian’s Approach to Autonomy

Level 2 vs. Level 3 Driving

  • Level 2 (L2): Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), like Tesla’s Autopilot and Ford’s BlueCruise, require continuous driver supervision.
  • Level 3 (L3): Allows drivers to take their eyes off the road in certain conditions, though they must be prepared to take over if necessary.

While Level 2 autonomy is becoming more common, Level 3 remains a major milestone in self-driving technology. So far, only Mercedes-Benz has received U.S. approval to offer Level 3 autonomy with its Drive Pilot system, available in select states like California and Nevada.

Rivian’s Autonomous Vehicle Hardware

Rivian’s Autonomy Platform, currently integrated into its R1T pickup and R1S SUV, features:

  1. 11 exterior cameras
  2. 12 ultrasonic sensors
  3. 4 corner radars
  4. 1 forward radar
  5. Driver-facing camera

However, its present capabilities do not yet match Ford’s BlueCruise or Tesla’s Autopilot. To achieve Level 3 autonomy, Rivian may require additional sensor hardware and AI-based enhancements.

Challenges & Industry Competition

Attaining Level 3 by next year would be an impressive feat, given the regulatory hurdles and the need for robust validation. While Mercedes-Benz has led the way with Drive Pilot, Rivian aims to accelerate development by leveraging AI advancements in self-driving technology.

Rivian’s upcoming R2 SUV (expected in early 2026) is also expected to feature autonomy-focused upgrades, though details remain unclear. The company is reportedly considering colored lighting indicators for autonomous mode, similar to Mercedes’ turquoise-lit Drive Pilot system.

The Future of Rivian’s Self-Driving Technology

As AI-driven self-driving advancements gain momentum, Rivian is pushing to establish itself as a leader in premium electric autonomy. With hands-free Level 2 this year and eyes-off Level 3 in 2026, the company is racing toward a future where vehicles handle more of the driving, giving passengers greater freedom.

Will Rivian meet its ambitious timeline? Stay tuned for updates on this exciting journey!
