Taiwanese chip design leader MediaTek has announced plans to expand its workforce in India significantly. As the largest chip supplier for smartphones in India, MediaTek is poised to tap into the country’s burgeoning tech ecosystem with a hiring spree aimed at bolstering its engineering and design capabilities.
According to Counterpoint Research, MediaTek has overtaken Qualcomm as the leading chip provider for both budget-friendly and premium smartphones. The company’s strategic focus on India aligns with the nation’s rapid technological advancement, particularly in the transition from 4G to 5G networks.
“There are a lot of exciting opportunities that we see in India. First and foremost are smartphones. We’re going through a massive 4G to 5G transition. It’s happening very quickly here,” said Finbarr Moynihan, MediaTek’s Global VP for Corporate Marketing. This transition is complemented by a growing consumer preference for premium smartphones, creating higher demand for advanced chipsets—a market MediaTek is well-equipped to serve.
India’s Strategic Role in MediaTek’s Growth
India plays a pivotal role in MediaTek’s global R&D ecosystem. The company’s Indian operations include a substantial team of over 1,000 engineers spread across Bangalore, Noida, and Mumbai. This number is set to grow as MediaTek aims to harness the country’s unique combination of English-speaking capabilities and exceptional engineering talent.
“India is one of those rare countries which has a combination of English-speaking skills and good engineering. This is unique, and not many countries can boast of this,” said Anku Jain, Managing Director of MediaTek India. The company views the rise in local production and consumption of electronics as a significant growth avenue.
MediaTek’s R&D initiatives in India contribute to the development of global technology platforms, making its Indian team integral to the company’s international success. With an expanding local presence and a focus on cutting-edge chip design, MediaTek is strengthening its commitment to India’s growing role in the global technology supply chain.
