According to a recent EY India report, How much productivity can GenAI unlock in India? The AIdea of India: 2025, AI adoption—especially generative AI (GenAI)—is poised to transform 38 million jobs by 2030 and deliver a 2.61% productivity boost to the organized sector. An additional 2.82% gain could be realized if the unorganized sector embraces GenAI. Yet, skill shortages remain a significant barrier, with only 3% of Indian enterprises possessing sufficient in-house AI talent.
Key Findings
- Automation Potential: 24% of tasks can be fully automated, and another 42% can be AI-enhanced, saving 8-10 hours/week for knowledge workers.
- Industry-Level Impact: Services will see the highest productivity gains, particularly in call center management (80% potential) and software development (61%). Manufacturing and construction are expected to see lower, yet notable, improvements.
- Adoption Stages: Only 15% of enterprises have GenAI in production; 36% have yet to begin experimentation. Most struggle with data readiness and measuring Return on Investment (ROI).
Talent Shortages & AI Adoption
Skill gaps stand out as the main obstacle to AI deployment. Although AI promises efficiency, 97% of Indian enterprises cite lack of expertise as the primary challenge. EY’s Chairman and CEO Rajiv Memani emphasizes the need for upskilling, while EY India Technology Consulting Leader Mahesh Makhija highlights AI’s power to reshape healthcare, financial services, retail, IT/ITeS, and emerging fields like biotech.
Focus on ROI and Falling AI Costs
Enterprises require robust frameworks to measure and allocate AI costs effectively. Currently, only 8% of those with GenAI in production can fully quantify AI expenses, underscoring a need for clearer ROI metrics to drive widespread adoption.
