When it rains, it pours—Tesla is accelerating its plans to establish a strong foothold in India. Reports from The Economic Times suggest that Maharashtra is a prime contender for Tesla’s manufacturing plant. Additionally, the Elon Musk-led EV giant is rumoured to be in discussions with Tata Motors for a potential collaboration, marking a significant step forward in Tesla’s Indian expansion.
Why Maharashtra Makes Sense for Tesla
Maharashtra, particularly Pune’s Chakan area, has long been a hub for leading automobile manufacturers, including Mahindra & Mahindra, Bajaj, Tata Motors, Mercedes-Benz, and Volkswagen. The presence of a well-established automotive ecosystem, skilled workforce, and robust supply chain infrastructure makes the state an attractive choice for Tesla. Additionally, Pune is already home to Tesla’s first office in India, located at Panchshil Business Park, which the company secured on a five-year lease in 2023.
Tesla’s Hiring Spree in India
To reinforce its commitment to the Indian market, Tesla has recently posted 13 job openings on its official LinkedIn page. These roles, primarily based in Mumbai and Delhi, suggest that the company is actively setting up its customer service division and backend operations. The current job listings include:
- Service Technician
- Service Manager
- Inside Sales Advisor
- Customer Support Supervisor
- Customer Support Specialist
- Order Operations Specialist
- Service Advisor
- Tesla Advisor
- Parts Advisor
- Delivery Operations Specialist
- Business Operations Analyst
- Store Manager
These job postings indicate that Tesla is gearing up for an aggressive push into India, focusing on strengthening its service network before rolling out vehicle sales.
Tesla’s Showroom Expansion Plans
Tesla’s presence in India dates back to 2021, when it finalized a showroom in Mumbai. However, the company has now expanded its plans, zeroing in on two prime locations—Aerocity in New Delhi and Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai. This move comes in the wake of recent policy changes by the Indian government, which reduced customs tariffs on EVs priced above $40,000 from 110% to 70%, providing Tesla with the opportunity it had been awaiting.
With hiring in full swing and showroom locations secured, Tesla’s entry into India appears imminent. The potential partnership with Tata Motors could further bolster its local supply chain, giving Tesla a strategic advantage in the world’s third-largest automobile market.
