Siemens and Microsoft Unite to Set a New Standard for IoT Interoperability in Smart Buildings

In a significant leap toward open, interoperable smart infrastructure, Siemens Smart Infrastructure has announced a strategic collaboration with Microsoft to transform how IoT data is accessed and leveraged in buildings. At the heart of this partnership is the seamless integration of Siemens’ Building X platform with Microsoft’s Azure IoT Operations, enabled by Azure Arc. Together, they aim to unlock siloed IoT data, accelerate device onboarding, and empower building managers with full visibility and control over energy, air quality, and space utilization.

Breaking the Silos in Building IoT

Building X, Siemens’ digital building platform, will now interoperate directly with Azure IoT Operations to allow one-click onboarding, seamless device integration, and automated cloud-based monitoring of physical assets like HVAC systems, valves, actuators, and sensors. Whether it’s temperature, pressure, or air quality, this collaboration makes building data accessible across ecosystems—removing the historic barrier of vendor lock-in and providing true multi-vendor freedom.

“This collaboration reflects our shared vision of enabling customers to harness the full potential of IoT through open standards and interoperability,” said Susanne Seitz, CEO, Siemens Smart Infrastructure Buildings.

Open Standards, Real Impact

One of the most revolutionary aspects of this partnership is its pure reliance on open industry standards—a first at this scale. The integration follows W3C’s Web of Things (WoT) for defining metadata and interfaces, and OPC UA for secure and standardized data communication.

Both Siemens and Microsoft are active members of W3C and the OPC Foundation, emphasizing a joint commitment to accessibility, interoperability, privacy, and security in the IoT ecosystem.

“This is a significant step forward in making IoT data more actionable,” said Erich Barnstedt, Senior Director at Microsoft. “Our focus remains on empowering customers with greater choice and control over their IoT solutions.”

Why This Matters

In sectors like commercial real estate, data centers, and education, the ability to monitor real-time metrics—from energy consumption to air quality—can lead to smarter decisions, better sustainability, and leaner operations. With IoT data traditionally trapped in vendor-specific silos, the Siemens–Microsoft collaboration marks a turning point. The partnership enables customers to design their own use cases, such as space optimization or energy benchmarking, using accessible building data—without being bound to a single ecosystem.

The integrated solution will be available commercially in the second half of 2025.
