Michelin and smart tag manufacturer Beontag have partnered to revolutionize tire technology by embedding RFID-enabled smart tags into millions of commercial and passenger tires over the next two years. This innovative approach is set to enhance tire lifecycle management, from manufacturing to recycling, providing both operational efficiency and sustainability.
Smart Tag Technology Transforming Tires
The collaboration incorporates Beontag’s ultra-high frequency (UHF) RFID technology into Michelin tires, enabling seamless tracking of tires throughout their lifecycle. This includes key data points such as manufacturing date, storage location, distribution, installation, replacement, and refurbishment.
Michelin and Beontag have been working on this RFID-enabled solution since 2019, conducting rigorous testing to ensure the technology’s reliability and durability. The embedded RFID tags are designed to last up to 621,000 miles, even supporting truck tire retreading processes.
Key Benefits of RFID-Enabled Smart Tires
- Enhanced Operational Efficiency: RFID tags provide precise, automated tracking from tire production to recycling, streamlining operations across the supply chain.
- Sustainability Focus: By enabling better lifecycle management, the technology supports ecological goals, reducing waste through optimized retreading and recycling processes.
- Improved Fleet Management: Commercial vehicle operators can gain real-time insights into tire performance, enhancing safety, reducing downtime, and optimizing costs.
Driving Innovation and Sustainability
Laurent Couturier, RFID system designer at Michelin, highlighted the significance of this technology in meeting today’s economic and environmental challenges: “This system enables precise, automated tracking of each tire from production to retreading or recycling. The RFID tire-tag improves industrial performance while addressing today’s ecological imperatives. In collaboration with Beontag, we have developed an RFID tag that meets both the economic and environmental challenges of the future, paving the way for new mobility solutions.”
Suchi Srinivasan, Beontag’s Global Vice President of Digital Transformation, emphasized the achievement and future potential of this partnership: “We are enormously proud to share what we have achieved so early in our partnership with Michelin. As an innovation-led, problem-solving partner for our customers, we have worked hard to develop the necessary technology and durability capabilities in these RFID-enabled tires. I look forward to continuing this journey with Michelin to drive business and promote sustainability.”
A New Era for Smart Tires
The integration of RFID tags into Michelin tires is a game-changer for the tire industry, providing unparalleled insights and control. By merging cutting-edge technology with sustainable practices, Michelin and Beontag are setting a new standard for connected mobility solutions.
