
Maharashtra to Establish India’s First AI University, Led by Industry Experts

Maharashtra is set to lead India’s artificial intelligence (AI) revolution with the establishment of the country’s first AI-focused university. The initiative, announced by state IT minister Ashish Shelar, aims to create a center of excellence in AI education, research, and innovation.
A task force, comprising experts from academia, industry, and government, has been constituted to oversee the university’s planning and implementation. The goal is to bridge the skill gap, promote technological innovation, and develop policies for ethical AI advancement.
A Hub for AI Research and Innovation
The university will focus on fundamental AI disciplines, including:
- Machine Learning (ML)
- Data Science
- Robotics
- Automation
Additionally, the institution will encourage collaborations with global tech corporations, research organizations, and startups, fostering a multidisciplinary approach in fields like:
- Healthcare – AI-driven diagnostics & patient management
- Agriculture – Precision farming & crop monitoring
- Manufacturing – AI-powered automation & predictive maintenance
- Finance – Fraud detection & algorithmic trading
- Smart Governance – AI-based policy recommendations & citizen services
By integrating AI across industries, the university will equip the next generation of AI engineers, researchers, and entrepreneurs with the skills required to drive India’s digital future.
Industry Collaboration and Task Force Leadership
The task force, chaired by SVR Srinivasan, Principal Secretary of Maharashtra’s Information Technology Department, includes leaders from top institutions and corporations, such as:
- IIT Bombay & IIM Mumbai
- NASSCOM
- L&T
- Google India (Anil Kakodkar & Naren Kachru)
- Mahindra Group (Bhuvan Lodha)
- Atlas Skill University (VC Rajan Velukar)
- Ministry of Electronics and IT, Government of India
- Rajiv Gandhi Science and Technology Commission
- Data Security Council of India
So far, the task force has conducted two meetings, working toward finalizing the university’s blueprint.
