India’s Electronics Industry Set to Create 12 Million Jobs by 2027 Amid Unprecedented Growth

India’s electronics sector is poised for a transformative leap, targeting a manufacturing output of USD 500 billion by 2030, as per a report by TeamLease. To achieve this ambitious goal, the industry must expand fivefold over the next five years, bridging a USD 400 billion production gap. Presently, domestic production stands at USD 101 billion, with mobile phones leading the charge, contributing 43% of the output.

Other significant contributors include consumer and industrial electronics (12% each), electronic components (11%), and emerging segments such as automotive electronics (8%), LED lighting (3%), wearables and hearables (1%), and PCBAs (1%). This growth trajectory is expected to generate 12 million jobs by 2027, including 3 million direct and 9 million indirect roles.

Direct employment will span a wide range of technical domains, including nearly 1 million engineers, 2 million ITI-certified professionals, and 200,000 experts in high-demand fields like artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and data science. Non-technical roles will form the bulk of indirect employment opportunities, reflecting the sector’s ability to drive economic growth and create diverse career paths.

Despite its bright outlook, the sector faces a critical talent gap, both in terms of quantity and quality. Bridging this gap is essential for achieving India’s ambitious manufacturing targets and solidifying its position in the global electronics supply chain. Key areas requiring skilled professionals include semiconductors, electromechanical components, and both passive and active electronics.

To address these challenges, a multi-faceted approach is essential. Workforce skills must align with industry needs through initiatives like ITI enrollment, in-house training centers, and apprenticeship programs. AR Ramesh, CEO of TeamLease Degree Apprenticeship, emphasized the importance of scaling skilling programs, noting, “Apprenticeship enrollments, growing at a 55% CAGR, are projected to reach 2 million by 2027, creating a robust talent pipeline for the industry.”

Sumit Kumar, Chief Strategy Officer at TeamLease, echoed this sentiment, stating, “Employers must collaborate with academia through Work-Integrated Learning Programs (WILP) and degree apprenticeships. Reskilling and upskilling initiatives targeting over 50% of the workforce will empower India to bridge the skills gap and drive sustainable growth.”

Strategic investments in infrastructure, policy reforms, and innovation will also play a pivotal role. By fostering industry-academia partnerships and enhancing apprenticeship opportunities, India can overcome talent shortages and sustain the rapid growth needed to emerge as a global leader in electronics manufacturing.
