Union Minister Nishikant Dubey has emphasized India’s commitment to advancing artificial intelligence (AI), stating that the country is on track to becoming a world leader in the field. Speaking after a meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Communications and IT, Dubey highlighted AI’s transformative impact on India’s economy and employment sector.
AI’s Role in India’s Economic Growth
Dubey projected that AI will contribute over $1 trillion to India’s economy in the next 7-8 years, generating employment for 50 to 60 lakh people. He stressed that India cannot afford to halt technological progress and must actively integrate AI across industries such as:
- Banking & Finance – AI-driven automation & fraud detection
- Taxation & Customs – Streamlining compliance & risk assessment
- Excise & Revenue Management – Efficient policy implementation
The meeting also evaluated the preparedness of Indian ministries to handle AI’s implications, ensuring that technological advancements align with ethical AI practices and data privacy standards.

India has been actively shaping global AI policies, with key milestones including:
- AI in the G20 Narrative – India championed discussions on inclusive AI & its governance

S Krishnan, Secretary of MeitY, reaffirmed India’s innovation-driven AI strategy, emphasizing its role in productivity, sustainable development, and minimizing risks. India has also joined the Coalition on Sustainable AI, ensuring AI aligns with environmental and SDG goals.
