India is set to witness a transformative leap in its sensor technology sector with a landmark partnership between the India Electronics & Semiconductor Association (IESA) and the Electronics City Industries Association (ELCIA). This collaboration aims to fortify India’s ambitions in the Electronics System Design and Manufacturing (ESDM) space, driving innovation and reducing dependency on imports.
A Vision for a Self-Reliant India
The cornerstone of this partnership is the establishment of a Centre of Excellence (ECoE) dedicated to sensor technologies. This initiative is poised to address India’s surging demand for sensor modules, a market currently valued at ₹20,000 crore and projected to grow to ₹31,000 crore by 2027.
By focusing on cutting-edge technologies like analog and digital sensors, MEMS (Micro-Electromechanical Systems), NEMS (Nano-Electromechanical Systems), IR, UV, and laser-based sensors, the ECoE aims to position India as a global hub for sensor innovation and manufacturing.
Immediate Focus and Future Expansion
The initial phase of the ECoE will concentrate on industrial sensors, crucial for applications ranging from manufacturing to automation. Future plans include diversification into other verticals to cater to broader market needs, both domestically and internationally.
Industry Leaders Speak
- Ashok Chandak, President, IESA:
“Sensors are integral to countless applications. By focusing on design, manufacturing, and applications, this collaboration will reduce import reliance and catalyze growth in India’s semiconductor and electronics sectors.” - Sriram Kumar V, President, ELCIA:
“ELCIA aims to create an ecosystem that bridges industry and academia. Partnering with IESA for ECoE-S is a step toward reducing India’s 90% dependency on sensor imports, fueled by a passion to support Indian industry.” - Dr. V Veerappan, Chairman, IESA:
“This partnership is pivotal for India’s sensor manufacturing journey. Combining our strengths, we aim to create jobs, drive R&D, and establish India as a global player in sensor technology.”
Building a Global Leader in Sensor Technology
The collaboration aligns with India’s broader vision of becoming a self-reliant tech powerhouse, fostering innovation, and nurturing talent to support the country’s growing ESDM sector. The initiatives undertaken by IESA and ELCIA will not only accelerate sensor module production but also promote research, development, and job creation, setting India on a trajectory to compete in international markets.
With this strategic alliance, India is on the path to transforming its electronics and sensor industries, establishing itself as a global leader in technology innovation and manufacturing.
