Honda and Renesas Partner to Develop Advanced SoC for Software-Defined EVs

Honda Motor Co., Ltd. and Renesas Electronics Corporation have entered into a groundbreaking partnership to develop a high-performance system-on-chip (SoC) for Software-Defined Vehicles (SDVs). The SoC, boasting cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence (AI) capabilities, is designed for Honda’s future electric vehicles (EVs) under the “Honda 0 (Zero) Series,” expected to launch in the late 2020s.

Advancing Software-Defined Vehicles

The collaboration was announced at CES 2025 in Las Vegas, where Honda outlined its vision for SDVs—vehicles capable of delivering a personalized mobility experience. The Honda 0 Series will feature a centralized electronic/electrical (E/E) architecture, consolidating multiple electronic control units (ECUs) into a single, powerful core ECU.

This core ECU will manage critical vehicle functionalities, including:

  • Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS)
  • Automated Driving (AD)
  • Powertrain control
  • Comfort features

To power this innovative architecture, Honda requires a SoC that combines high processing performance with exceptional power efficiency.

Renesas’ Role in Transforming Mobility

Renesas Electronics, a leader in automotive semiconductor solutions, is collaborating with Honda to develop the new SoC. The system will integrate Renesas’ fifth-generation R-Car X5 SoC series and an AI accelerator tailored to Honda’s proprietary AI software. Leveraging TSMC’s state-of-the-art 3-nanometer automotive process technology, the SoC will deliver:

  • AI Performance: 2,000 TOPS (Tera Operations Per Second) for advanced computational needs.
  • Power Efficiency: 20 TOPS/W, making it one of the most efficient in the industry.
  • Customizability and Upgradability: Enabled by multi-die chiplet technology for future improvements.

The chiplet design not only supports advanced features like automated driving but also keeps power consumption in check, ensuring energy efficiency in EVs.

Enhancing Mobility for Honda’s EV Series

This partnership marks a significant milestone in Honda and Renesas’ longstanding collaboration. By integrating Renesas’ advanced semiconductor solutions into the Honda 0 Series, the companies aim to enhance the mobility experience for EV customers. The SoC will allow Honda’s SDVs to deliver on their promise of personalized, intelligent driving experiences while maintaining the low energy consumption necessary for sustainable mobility.

The Road Ahead

The development of this advanced SoC is set to redefine the capabilities of software-defined EVs, paving the way for innovation in the automotive sector. Honda’s vision of centralized architectures powered by high-performance SoCs represents the future of mobility, blending AI-driven intelligence with exceptional efficiency.
