Ampere and STMicroelectronics Unite for Advanced Powerbox with Long-Term Silicon Carbide Supply

Ampere, a pioneering European intelligent electric vehicle (EV) player emerging from Renault Group, has announced an extended collaboration with STMicroelectronics, a global leader in semiconductor technology. Beginning in 2026, this strategic partnership introduces a multi-year agreement to supply Silicon Carbide (SiC) power modules, forming a key component of Ampere’s next-generation ultra-efficient electric powertrain.

The collaboration focuses on optimizing the “powerbox,” a crucial part of Ampere’s inverter system, ensuring high performance and cost-effectiveness. Ampere brings expertise in EV technology, while STMicroelectronics contributes its advanced power electronics know-how, creating a synergy aimed at pushing the boundaries of e-powertrain efficiency.

Philippe Brunet, Senior Vice President of Powertrain and EV Engineering at Ampere, highlighted,

By co-developing solutions upstream, we’ve optimized and secured the supply of essential components for our electric powertrains. Why Silicon Carbide Matters:

Silicon Carbide power modules, built from numerous SiC chips, manage energy conversion between the battery and motor. These modules enhance powertrain efficiency, boost battery range, and improve regenerative energy capabilities. The result is smoother driving dynamics and responsive performance in EVs.

Powerbox Innovation:

The jointly developed powerbox supports both 400V and 800V battery systems, tailored to Ampere’s diverse lineup of EVs. The 800V configuration, in particular, enables rapid charging—achieving 10%-80% in under 15 minutes. This innovation exemplifies Ampere’s strategy to master the electric vehicle value chain by partnering with industry leaders like STMicroelectronics.

Technical Excellence:

The powerbox integrates:

  • Three SiC-based power modules to manage energy flow.
  • An excitation module for motor field control.
  • A cooling baseplate that ensures efficient thermal management.
