1.3 Lakh Jobs: How PLI Is Reshaping India’s Electronics Industry

According to the Ministry of Electronics and IT, the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for Large-Scale Electronics Manufacturing has created 1.3 lakh direct jobs till June 2025, driven primarily by mobile phone production. The scheme has attracted Rs 12,390 crore in investments, enabled Rs 8.44 lakh crore in total production, and turned India from a mobile importer to a net exporter.

From Importer to Powerhouse

Back in 2014–15, India imported 75% of its mobile phones. Fast forward to 2024–25 — that number has dropped to just 0.02%. India is now the second-largest mobile manufacturer in the world. Mobile phone exports alone have risen 127x in a decade, jumping from Rs 1,500 crore to Rs 2 lakh crore. This transformation is the result of focused policy, massive infrastructure push, and growing global trust in India’s electronics manufacturing capabilities.

What the Numbers Say

Minister of State Jitin Prasada, in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, shared key highlights:

  • 1.3 lakh direct jobs created till June 2025
  • Rs 12,390 crore cumulative investment
  • Rs 8.44 lakh crore cumulative production
  • Rs 4.65 lakh crore worth of exports
  • Mobile phone exports up 127x since 2014–15

This shift isn’t just about trade balances. It’s about creating real jobs, attracting long-term capital, and placing India at the center of global supply chains.

PLI = Policy That Delivers

The Mobile PLI scheme is one of India’s most successful manufacturing policies to date — serving as a template for similar PLI programs across sectors like semiconductors, batteries, and consumer electronics. Its success shows how India can scale global manufacturing while building domestic capabilities — from PCB assembly to full-stack device manufacturing. With electronics demand rising globally and geopolitical shifts forcing supply chain diversification, India’s momentum in mobile manufacturing gives it a clear edge.

The Road Ahead

India isn’t just assembling phones. It’s now a key exporter of high-value electronics. The focus for the future will likely include:

  • Component ecosystem development
  • Semiconductor and chip-level integration
  • Skill upgradation and automation adoption
  • Strengthening MSME participation in the supply chain

If sustained, this PLI-powered transformation could become the blueprint for India’s next wave of industrial growth.

From Assembly Line to Powerhouse Nation

India’s mobile PLI story isn’t just about phones. It’s about jobs, exports, credibility, and scale. It’s proof that with the right push, Make in India isn’t just a slogan — it’s a working model.
